14.1 Creating Belief in Yourself

This is how we create consistency

The way that we don’t give up is by having such incredible belief in the future version of ourselves that our success is inevitable. When we believe that we are going to be successful, it’s just a matter of time.


All right, so in this video, what I want to talk about is belief. And when we talk about belief, there are actually two different kinds of definitions. One is there’s a term that we call beliefs, which is technically thoughts that we think of repeatedly.

So, for example, when I have the belief that I am not enough, or I believe that I am fat, or I believe that I am selfish. So, these are thoughts that we think about ourselves. And so, those all go in the T line, actually, all beliefs go in the tea line.

But when we think about our circumstances, our thoughts or our beliefs are not facts. When we have a belief, it just means that we have thought that thought multiple times. And so. It becomes fact for us sometimes. And so, in this video though, I really want to start talking about future beliefs. Believing in yourself so that you can go ahead and be successful in whatever it is that you want to do.

And so, there’s one worksheet that I really want to point you to, and it’s called the belief scale. And this worksheet is super important because when we feel that our belief is fading, we really want to understand why we are believing that our belief is failing.

For example, one of the questions is on a scale from 1 to 10, how do you believe that you will be successful in your goal? And then, the next question is why did you pick that number? So, when we think about our belief and commitment towards ourselves, towards our health, it’s really important to really think about, why do I believe that? Why do I believe that I’m going to be successful? Or why do I believe that I’m not going to be successful?

Because once we can start teasing out those beliefs, those thoughts that we have that are in the back of our minds, then we can really address them. We can bring them to the front and decide, do I want to keep believing that or not? And so, one of the things that our brains will do is it will go back into the past and it will find evidence for our beliefs.

So, one thing might be when we look at our future success. When we’re asking ourselves, what is my belief? My number on a scale from 1 to 10 of how much do I believe that I’m going to be successful in this weight loss goal? You might be at a 4. And the reason why you might be at a 4 is because when you look at past weight loss attempts, I haven’t panned out. And so, therefore you have very little evidence to support you being successful in the future.

However, what I want to offer you is that our brain will go in the past in order to seek evidence for our success in the future. However, for everyone who has lost weight, they have had a string of failed attempts.

And what happens then is they will have one final attempt, right? Where they don’t have to struggle anymore. It’s like that old joke of, “I lost my phone, where was it?” It was in the last place I looked for it because you eventually find it. We eventually find success. And so, what I want to do is through this week, I really want to start thinking about our belief system and our belief in ourselves.

And again, with this whole month, it’s not about painting a rosy picture. It’s not about unicorns, and daffodils, and daisies, and rainbows, and all of that great stuff. Although that’s fine, it’s not about lying to ourselves and blowing smoke. What this is about is really thinking about our negative thoughts that occur in our heads. Okay. The negative thoughts that our lower brain offers us. And then, really trying to actively turn that around. Looking at whether there are facts and what part of that our brain is just making up.

So, when we look at the past, we can start thinking about, “well, what are the facts of the past?” And does that dictate that I’m not going to be successful in the future. And so, really again, talking to ourselves way more than we’re listening to ourselves. All right?
